Mellotex, Conqueror

Postby kennyc » Sat Aug 05, 2017 1:06 pm

See that'll teach me to put my drawing aside for four years....Mellotex apparently is no more (I just learned from Mike's website) and Conqueror is the new emperor. Wow! I'm sort of devastated.   but do have a stash of Mellotex since I bought two batches from Mike a while back!

Can anyone (including Mike) give me a run-down on the differences, the best, the worst?

Maybe comparison to Bristol as well??

I'm sure I'll have to try it given that it is now Mike's choice.

Paper matters!

P.S. I see this on Mike's website but maybe some experiential input/comparison from those who have tried it?

Well I went ahead and placed an order to Mike for 5 sheets to try out, but still would like to hear other's impressions of this and or other papers. It's my contention that the paper is pretty much the key item for any particular drawing.

Also love to hear about Conqueror compared to Arches HP or other papers.

Got my Conqueror paper .... not sure when I'll try a real drawing on it, but will cut some pieces (9 x 11 - it's what I do) and do some tryouts soon.

:D

definitely whiter maybe even slightly smoother....maybe slightly thinner but not by much if any.
definitely smoother than Bristol Smooth

Just tried a few marks on it with various grade leads and it seems to respond very much like Mellotex.

More later when I dig deeper.

Actually started a drawing on it and I'm not liking it.....not liking it enough that I restarted on Mellotex and am much happier....perhaps it's just that I am 'used' to the Mellotex, but I think there is a significant difference in the responsiveness to the graphite/pencils.

I'll leave it at that for now, more later....

Ended up abandoning the Conqueror drawing for now but finished the Mellotex version -Old Weathered Woman in a separate thread. I do have another image sketched on Conqueror though and may complete it but have another one in mind first....not sure of the paper on it, but am tempted to try Arches again (after my little experiment with the Old Woman's Eye on Bristol and Arches (see the other thread).

I just had to cut up some more 9x11 inch size Mellotex papers from the larger sheets ... cut up two large sheets into 8 - 9x11 inch pieces sor there's potentially 8 drawings at my typical size and counting my Mellotex stash I have 13 more sheets....giving potentially 50+ more drawings. at one drawing a month......that's maybe 5 years...
