"My One And Only" (posted here) background used 9xx then burnished with 2h and finished with felt. Came out great, background really black and made roses pop. Posted pic is not great taken with cell, but the left side is more what the finished drawing looks like. Please post soon so I can breath again

I'll take a look (I've been very absent the last few years). Spent about 4 hours late yesterday working on the lower left...and used the 9xxb to fill in that last remaining background bit. Began working on the shirt, wrinkles folds etc. and felt sure I'd ruined it but pushed on through and it doesn't look too bad this morning....I just might be able to do this. :)

Began working on the lower left, arm, background and shirt...trying to easy my way in to that chin area etc....
I felt certain I'd ruined it completely after a couple of hours on the arm and sleeve....but persevered and though I'm not happy with it yet...I got beyond the fear I think. Much still to be done here with the newly worked areas but I think I'm getting there and I think I can finish this up at least to some level of satisfaction. This is about 7 additional hours bringing the total up to around 60 hours. Definitely need to work/rework that right ear as laurene pointed out long ago. Not sure exactly how I'll deal with it...in the reference photo it is almost non-visible....we'll see...

I'm amazed with the detailed old face ...
It's better than in real life I think ;)
To me it is an amazing drawing no matter what you say about the arm, sleeve or anything else ;)

PS: A few days ago my PC broke down together with the monitor...
All at once ;(
The reference picture were on my computer, you know, the Grandpa drawing I'm working on...
I've got spare tv to use as a monitor, but computer doesn't show the screen, it's all blank black ...
I'm a bit ruined by what has happened...
I have no much time to take computer somewhere to fix it cause of unsuitable working hours...
Time is ticking...
This experience telling me that it's good to print the reference out, just in case ;)
All the best Kenny.

Worked and reworked and reworked that collar (ended up breaking out the Stadetler .3mm hb mechanical for that and it still needs work, maybe a complete rework), began working on the neck area. Still need to go back to the left-side shirt and finish, but thought I'd brave the neck area for a first pass on it. That's really the toughest part left, then I'll go back and give the shirt and then the neck a second pass before finishing the shirt on the right, which should be relatively simple at that point. This shot is about 3-4 hours more a bit yesterday and and today. Some 63 hours or so at this point.

Kenny this is nothing short of spectacular!!! I see what you are saying about the collar but I know for a fact we are sometimes
our own worst critique. This is such an emotional piece

Something of a 'red-letter' day. This drawing was sketched (i.e. started) in November 2012. The actual work (i.e. shading) began a year later November 2013, almost four years ago. As of today there is graphite on all of it, though much finishing to do on the lower right and shirt as a whole. I worked a bit on the neck today but otherwise finished the initial shading on the shirt. About 2.5 hours for an approximate total of 65 or so hours. (who really knows at this point. )
Much finishing to do on the shirt, the arm, neck and sleeve.

just a tiny bit more, maybe not even worth a post but not sure I'll get any more done today. Working of mostly the lower-right side shirt.

Kenny, this is just so very nice! You have managed to bring her to life showing all the years of toil and drudgery in her eyes. Those eyes bring to your work an emotional sadness. Wonderful job....

Want to ask you about the 9xxb background, know you had mentioned this was your fist time with this pencil. I realize that this is a scanned piece but I am picking up white showing through in the background. Does the original show this also? Also seeing the 9xxb pencil strokes in the background which is not present in the rest of your drawing.

You're seeing what's there....I may (or may not) work the background more. The 9xxb is not like graphite (more like charcoal...I suspect it is a blend or something -- didn't find anything definitive on it when beginning this and haven't looked since) in that it doesn't seem to develop the shine as much so possible to go darker I think. This/that was my primary reason for choosing to try it out on this particular drawing. It is so (flat) dark that it does tend to somewhat 'wash out' the graphite. I'm not a 'blender' like J.D. is so not working totally from that perspective. Once I finish up the shirt/arm/neck I may go back and see about smoothing/blending the background.

Thanks!
