Indonesian Street Sweeper

Postby kennyc » Mon Nov 25, 2013 4:55 pm

Well my muse is whippin' on me again. My writing has gone to hell despite having released three books so far this year (or maybe because of it). Nothing writing-wise this month and I haven't picked up the pencils in almost a year other than just a bit of messin' around. So this will be a challenge to get back to it.

Indonesian Street Sweeper
8 x 11 Graphite on Mellotex paper.

The plan is to use General 9xxb for the dark background -- I'm a bit leery about it though as I've had a few bad experiences with dark backgrounds using anything other than graphite....ah well....life is uncertain, eh?

Interesting subject matter. Good luck with the background. Perhaps using a sample piece of paper to 'trial' it out might help the real drawing, if you are nervous about it.

Thanks Kiran. I've got the top of the background in -- at least initially, looks okay, but still will need a bit of smoothing, detail to make sure it's smooth/dark etc.

I did just that as far as using a sample and did a trial run of the hair on top of her head and I think it will work. The interesting thing about this 9xxb pencil (that I heard of from J.D.) is that it is apparently a mixture of charcoal or carbon and graphite or something. It's much easier to blend with graphite than straight charcoal or carbon. Also it's not as contrasty .... we'll see. I'll see if I can get a start on the hair where it comes together and I start having to switch and blend graphite and then will post an update.

So here's where I'm at after maybe 4-5 hours. Not much to see yet, just the initial background at the top and beginning to try and get the hair on top in place....still a ways to go there. I'll work it a bit more particularly on the left near the hand, lots to still do there and then begin working on the hand. The process here it to kind of work from top down, left to right as I'm right handed, but I don't typically 'complete' any part/section as I go so I will be making a full pass and then going back and finishing/adjusting as I go or in full passes, not sure yet how this is going to pan out.

Thanks Moe. I worked a bit on the fingers last night, will post an update in a bit...

Here's a small update....man am I rusty! Worked on/around the fingers a bit -- a couple of hours -- I need to kindof work on those so I can both get a feel for the tones and work my way down without too much smudging.....

Thanks Andrew! Got distracted yesterday by a broken dishwasher (no, no, no ... the appliance type ;) ) but hopefully will make some progress on this today and post an update.

Hey, Kenny, you're back too! That's great! I can't wait to see more - I know what you can do with these older faces that are so full of the life the subject has lived. Love the pose too. Just that hint of her leaning on her broom handle tells us volumes about her life.

Continued work on the fingers....not a lot today...maybe three hours max....still pretty ugly. It's getting there though. I'll continue to adjust and finish the fingers/hand til I'm somewhat happy before moving to the hair and then the forehead. May not have much time tomorrow as I'm cooking and spending time with my kids. :D
