My drawings

Postby Civnopews » Thu Sep 22, 2016 5:28 pm

I'm a pretty new artist, I'm 16 years old and I started drawing 2 weeks ago. I've only got 1 normal pencil, a rubber and normal paper.
I would like to share some of my drawings I made so far to receive some feedback from experienced artists, how I can improve. My drawings are inspired by photos, please have a quick look at them:
Zeus: http://imgur.com/ajpSuAv
Eagle: http://imgur.com/4KtG4YG
Guild Wars 2: http://imgur.com/tohJvC9
Guild Wars 2 Character: http://imgur.com/s9L8Ngj

Thank you for your feedback, I'm really looking forward for some tips and help as I'm just beginning :)

Hi it's good to have you over here!
Welcome ;)
As you've mentioned you're starting your drawing adventure and I can see many good things regarding your drawings. Obviously you can't do many things using only one pencil but there is much more in your drawings already and the good potential...
All I can say is to keep going this way, get some knowledge, study some more drawing techniques and learn from the others artists from this forum ;)
Do ask questions regards other artists drawings and I'm sure you'll get only better with your skills ;)
Thank you.

Thank you for your feedback, I really appreciate it! May I ask you what you specifically like about my drawings? I'm glad you like them!
Also I'm going to buy some more pencils this week, do you have any recommendations in terms of special types of pencils?

Hi , you welcome ;)
I'm big fan of Staedtler clutch pencils so I would recommend them if you haven't decide yet ;)
They're also a bit pricy so from my point of view just start with any kind of pencils you can afford, but I would suggest to keep with one brand only...
The manufacturer will make all the pencil grades matching.
If you use different made pencils you might find that one B grade pencil is actually identical to 2B of other pencil from different manufacturer...
If you use only Staedtler pencils for example, you can be sure that B is B , and 2B is 2B if it's making any sense?
The drawing paper is very important too.
Just start with good quality paper.
I'm always looking for the whitest paper possible.
It's because I can achieve greater contrast between dark and light areas to be able to play a bit more with shadows and light...
Regards your drawing I like that you're trying to draw humans and animals and they already looking like portraits ... I like the Eagle that's looking in some direction.., far away ;) and the Zeus is looking detailed, what's showing me your attention to details ;)
If you buy more grades like B, 2B ,4B ,H , you'll be able to create more depth into your arts to make them more realistic and 3 dimentional?
But all of this will come in time as you'll get better with understanding of how to use some techniques, and when you get more comfortable with what you want your drawing to look like ;)
I can't tell much more, because I had drawn only few drawings too, and I'm beginner like you ;)
I've started two years ago, but I'm working full time and I'm struggling to find free time for my drawings...
This is why I were able to finish only 5 or 6 drawings since then?! One drawing is usually taking me from start to finish about 2 or even 3 months... Sometimes I'm unable to draw for week or two... It's upseting me, but there is nothing I can do about. Family life, my working hours, walking my dog, jogging... It's difficult sometimes to keep me drawing between day by day responsibilities ...
So I am still learning, practising and watching other artists just to be able to make some progress with my drawings.
I've been told to practice practice and practice ;)
So this is my advice to you - practice and you'll see your progress quicker than you might expect ;)
All the best!

There is actually two more things I've forgot to mention ;)
The first is - get a good book where you can learn a lot and see examples. I'd recommend Mike Sibley book for example. The second thing you can do to improve and understand more about drawing is to go on YouTube...
This is where I've started...
On YouTube there's many artists, good and bad as well ;)
But you can watch their tutorials regards whatever your subject might be.
What I'm saying is, do prepare before you start your new drawing. For example if you after to draw a horse?
Study the book if you got one, and go YouTube and search how to draw a horse, and how to draw the horse's eye, legs or tail... Do you know I mean?
Watch then how the artists dealing with the subject and try to follow their advices ;)
It'll help you to understand more about what you after to draw ;)
Good luck !

Thanks for the tip! I searched and subscribed some artists on YouTube yesterday and I'm going to watch them from now on. I also bought some pencils: 2B 4B 6B, so I'm going to exercise a lot!

Well done !
Don't forget that grades 2H, H and HB aren't any less important too ;)
My advice is to always be good prepared before you start new drawing ;)
If you about to draw a dog, get read some book if you got one, if not go YouTube and search - how to draw dog's eyes, or fur, or portrait... Watch those tutorials and choose these that you prefer over the others and try to watch how artists dealing with the subject first.
Then , being rich of such experience, try it yourself.
First study what you about to draw to understand the nature of your subject ;)
Good luck !

@pogart I made a new drawing, its drawn from my eye. I've drawn an apple which was laying on my desk today. It's 60% finished, because I want to optimize the shadows and so on, but I want to sleep now!

I like it!
I'm really do ;)
I can see improvement of your sketch skills too!
As far as I can tell since your first drawings, in this one you're trying and managing to give the viewer much more of 3 dimentional experience!
I can tell that you're much more careful of details and giving more contrast between light and the dark places what's creating more 3D experience ;)
Well done!
I know it must have been much more effort and time spent on this subject but the simply apple you have drawn very well and even it's not finished is looking already improved regards your very first sketches...
Very good!

Hey @pogart!
I'm writing this reply the second time now, because it couldn't be sent for whatever reason the first time...
Maybe you can't remember me anymore, but I'm here to give you a quick update on where I've gone from the beginning about half a year ago, when you helped me out on my drawings! I'd like to thank you for your early help, as well as give you an update on my work!
I bought a wacom tablet and photoshop, I'm working on my Pc right now. I moved from "copying" to drawing from imagination, and I'm drawing a lot everyday, I never left out a day without drawing anything. I found a lot of amazing artists on my way so far as well! I watched and learned on Youtube, and every other source. I read books about drawing, about building personality and improving myself. I am drawing almost all my free time every day, I'm not laying around lazy anymore. I never thought I could become that motivated and hungry for learning ;) I am progressing every day! There's so much I could tell you about all that, but it would fill plenty sites of text :P
I think it's just fair to show you my progress, so here's a link to my artworks, I'm improving on every picture! http://znkt.deviantart.com/

My goal is to work at RIOT some day soon, when I am good enough. I will get there I think, I put more efforts in it than anyone else :P I love drawing.

Thanks again for your early support, I really appreciate it, you were one of the reasons I kept drawing. I hope you get to see my reply,
Greetings,
ZNKT

I'm glad that you've seen my message ;) I really want to go into the direction of fantasy drawing because that's why I even started it all!
I have checked my Deviantart posts but it appears that I can't find you comment! Maybe you can double check if it was really sent or if there was an error..
It's really cool to hear from you again after half a year, I couldn't have imagined that ^^

Yeah you right, there is no comment left ...
I think I know what might happened, I'm not a member of that website and I left comment but it was deleted as I didn't signed in.
I am sorry, I thought the comment was left for you ;)
All the best to you and keep drawing because you have made a big step forward regarding the quality of your arts ;)
