What's the name of the better true dark pencils out there, and how do you sharpen soft charcoal without breaking it?

Generals 9xxb is the darkest graphite that I know of. It gets very dark withhout the graphite shine. The only way I can sharpen soft charcoal without breaking it is to shave the wood casing off with a razor blade and sharpen with sandpaper paddle.
