Sketches in public and life studies

Postby kirants » Sun Feb 26, 2017 7:40 am

Been drawing/sketching/painting on and off. No regularity, just random when opportunity provides itself. Hope you like it. Comments and critiques welcomed as usual.

Hi Kiran,
It's great to see your work again! You're still one of the only artists I know who can draw from life this way.

Your life studies are wonderful Kiran. I envy your ability to grasp a pose so quickly. The ones that really caught my eye were # 5, 7, 8, and 14. You work is fluid and natural. When something looks natural and effortless like this it's a result of a lot of work and practice!

Your sketches are always so interesting to see and your sketchbooks will be great reminders of your travels. I see stories behind many of the characters. Some of these have a Norman Rockwell feel to them in the sense that he was a great storyteller who used a paintbrush instead of a pen. I think that some of these could be developed further along that line.

Thanks, Laurene. Yes, certainly. Like any other thing in life, the more the mileage, the easier it gets. Glad you liked.

I agree with Laurene, your work is so spontanious and accurate. I wish I could draw from life the way you do. It takes a long time to draw gesturally in a way that looks natural and not overdrawn. It'd be cool if you did a time lapse video of your sketch. I'm curious how you do it!

Great work.
Ken

Thanks for the thumbs up, Ken. It has taken a long time for me to get to where am at today, but just persistence has helped build confidence. With models posing, the approach tends to be to get to the gesture with the hand loosely flowing and looking more at the model. With public sketching where people are moving, it becomes more of registering the figure in memory and reinforcing the drawing as the figures get back to about the same position, even when they are moving. I wish I could do the time lapse. In model settings, cameras are not allowed. In public, am not sure. Where you referring to time lapse for the posed model sketches, or the ones of general public?

Another fine series of drawings Kiran. I had a couple of life sessions last week, and boy am I rusty! So I admire your perseverance and dedication. Ability is nothing without practice, as I well know and proved last week. :x
