Old Arab Man

Postby kennyc » Sun Aug 13, 2017 3:04 am

Not sure how much/many progresses steps I'll post on this one. I considered just working it and posting the final ....but...

Old Arab Man. This is 9 x 11 inches graphite on Mellotex, just couldn't resist that face!

I started with the keffiyeh. (I learned a new word)

About an hour on the sketch another couple of hours fooling around on the face (which I shouldn't have been doing when following my top-down first, second, third pass process), Then about 1.5 hours on the keffiyeh tonight. Not much to see yet and what I"ve done is very preliminary.

No please, I couldn't take another five years! Worked on the keffiyeh (dontcha love that word :) some more maybe 2-3 hours.. Hats are very important in my drawings. Trying to get the texture/look/feel right. Will post an update later today.

Thanks for taking a look!

A small update about three hours working on and reworking previous parts of the hat.

Thanks Bob! Here's an update from yesterday's work... about 5 more hours on the &*^$#))*)#@& keffiyeh (and I'm now certain that this is what Trump meant when he said 'covfefe' :D)

Working the left side hat and face a bit (I will as typical of me need to go back and rework/readjust as I get further along) but that hat/keffeyey has got some crazy textures/shadows/highlights. I'll work on finishing that and then move back to the forehead and start working down the face. Still early but if you see anything that totally annoys you or is just simply wrong let me know.

Another 3-4 hours yesterday and today. Total so far about 14-15 hours. Done with the first pass on the hat/keffiyeh....might be a bit dark on the right side, but the light is more from the left....I'll be going back and adjusting later if needed....on to the face!!!

Progressing really well Ken! Do you always work from top to bottom, or do you change your method depending on the portrait? I usually work from the eyes out, but then I really have to be careful about smudging.

Thanks Laurene. Almost always top to bottom, left to right but with some variance....I do that mainly due to possible smudging issues....but I also always go back for a second/third....pass from top to bottom as well once I can see everything all together to adjust levels and details. Have to be careful with the smudging there for sure.

I do the same thing towards the end - I go back and adjust values, although I'm constantly adjusting as I go along. Smudging is always an issue!
