Willem Dafoe - movie/hollywood celebrity. I'm thinking this will be a quick on, mostly for hair practice, but ...

Willem Dafoe - 9 x 11 Graphite on Mellotex paper
about 3/4 hour for the sketch

and a few marks just to get started - about .5 hour

I don't know man! This hair! This Hair! .... of course that is one reason I chose it....I need lots of hair practice something you dog-drawers are all very good at. You may have wondered why all my portraits have hats or are bald. :lol:

Almost embarrassed to post this but WTF!

Ok, first things first. Hair is hair is hair, whether it's on a human animal or any other kind of animal so I think we dog-drawers might be able to help here.

Seriously Ken, check out Mike's hair tutorial online: https://www.sibleyfineart.com/tutorial--draw-hair.htm . It's free and I think it can help here because his demo is for dark hair just like Dafoe's. Dafoe's face is just full of character so I think this is right up your alley!

Yes will take a gander at his tutorial again.....this is just sitting here at the moment...the hair needs lots more work....hopefully it will get better than this first pass...if not....

about 3-4 more hours on that hair....still not happy with it, but I do hope it's getting better....more to do...or may move on a bit and come back... about 7 hours total so far....all hair....sheesh....

No additional work in the last few days, but here's a (hopefully) better pic of where I'm at and hope to make significant progress this week. about 7 hours so far.

Another 4-5 hours on the forehead, forehead, forehead, one eye and a few touchups at the hair/face interface....I'm feel it is at the 'really ugly duckling' phase but still hoping it can become a swan. :lol:

Not happy with the forehead yet but going to work on the other (our right) eye then maybe some rework on the forehead before and as I move on down. About 12 hours at this point.

an hour or so last night mostly on the right eye....pretty darn ugly at the moment....everything here needs lots of 'finishing touches!' Trying to be very careful around the eyes as they are the 'whitest' part of the image.
I see I've already smeared graphite all over the bottom/shirt area...not that big a deal, but that's why I have to stay away from charcoal. :lol:

about an hour this morning on the right (viewer right) cheek. Getting there....probably lots of adjustment/cleanup/finishing on everything......
