FWIW???

Really starting to take shape now Kenny. I'm loving all of the different textures and values so far. Lots and lots for the viewer to take in!

kinda working left to right now....doing my best to avoid my nemesis -- the nose.
about three-four more hours .. the sweater last night and then the beginnings of the neck today
total of about 20 hours now...and no where near that chin.....

May not look like much, but 2 or 3 more hours of work. The details on this one (as I knew going in) are difficult and time-consuming.

You're in the home stretch now Kenny! She's really showing loads and loads of personality already. Love the way you're playing light and shadow across her eyes!

Don't know about 'the home stretch' I sometimes get in a rush to finish so am trying to not follow that urge. :D

There are some strong shadows here that I was not fully aware of when I started that are definitely contributing to my 'learning process.'

Just spent a couple of hours on the nose/nose area....over to the right cheek after a break....

Enjoy!

Hope you are working on a great new fantastic amazing drawing!

four hours today....nose and right side cheek....first pass...I can see adjustments needed. As I said above the stark shadows are complicating things. :) But as they say....that which does not kill me makes me a better drawer!

I'm not drawing much right now Ken. I'm having a bit of trouble with my eyes, so giving them a rest. I might try playing with pan pastels or even digital art where detail is less important.

I can absolutely understand that those shadows are complicated!! How are you tackling them? Are you layering, or switching to softer grades of graphite or both?

Thanks. Good Luck with your eyes. I got 'one bad eye' myself, but not nearly as bad as our lady here.
Hope things get better for you.

as far as the shadows/shading I use various grades but seem to be using fewer these days, mostly 2h for initial work and then HB and a bit of 2b....just build up ... layering of sorts I guess ... and rework as I go to enhance contrast and details ...

got several hours in on this yesterday and some significant progress (will post an update later once the sun is up and I can shoot a pic of it outside). Looking like that end of month, end of first pass deadline might actually happen. :)

I always 'rush' it in the end... Here's the end of the first pass. About 34 hours. I see tons of stuff I think I want to 'touch up.' Inside pic taken just now....

Fantastic update Ken. I actually thought that the neck area would be the most difficult, but you rendered it so well! It has shape and dimension and the skin follows all of those pits and valleys - really well done. It's always more difficult in my experience to get a clearly defined 3-D effect when the subject is facing the viewer. Looking forward to the final posting.
