First horse portrait
My first horse portrait! I'm not quite happy with the mane, but it's the best I can do. Let me know what you think!
Re: First horse portrait
There's so much to admire here, and more so because it's your first horse portrait! The hair texture is very well studied. The muzzle is velvety soft just as it should be! The leather and metal on the tack are beautifully rendered. The mane could be more detailed but that's actually just a question of studying how the hair is formed into knots very carefully. If the detail isn't clear enough in your reference photo, try doing a google search until you've seen enough detail to understand those knots (I googled knotted mane). If you can see it, you can draw it
If I had one piece of advice to offer it would be to study the horse eye very carefully. If you have Mike's book, there's great information there. If not, you can find a lot of information online. The pupil is oval or cigar shaped and the outline tends to be a little fuzzy.
This is a beautiful drawing! You really captured the pride and elegance I associate with horses!

Typical when you want something you just cant find it
anyway not the image I was looking for but this was my beautiful boy
McKenzie, hopefully the image is still clear enough but their eyes are oval.
I have a drawing from another artist and he clearly has no idea and placed a human eye in one
of our other horses lol.
