Leo, my first cat drawing!

The animal and wildlife forum concentrates on drawings of all animals, from domestic pets to wildlife - anything dressed in fur, feathers or scales. The emphasis is on drawing but paintings are also acceptable.

Leo, my first cat drawing!

Postby KrissyNZ » Sun Dec 03, 2017 11:57 pm

My one and only Christmas commission this year is a tabby cat.. My first domestic cat commission :) I was worried about how to achieve the fur texture but I had an idea... and it worked! Lots of indentation and carefully placed pencil strokes. Because there is so much indentation it actually looks fantastic when the light hits it at the right angle... Little glowing white hairs that give it a bit of a 3D texture! Normally I don't like the way indenting looks, but this really is the perfect application for it!

Here is my reference.. (It's a merge of two photos).

And here is where I'm at with the drawing. It's smaller than normal, at 6x9" and I think I like working on this size better! It's quicker, which means lower cost to the customer too. I think once I officially "launch" this sized portrait to my customers it will be an immediate hit :) 4hrs 47mins so far.

Thanks Kenny :)

Leo is all done now and off to his home in Australia today! 10hrs 5mins of work and a lot I wish I could've spent more time on but the deadline was brought forward at the last minute so just had to do what I could! Loved working at this size, means much quicker drawings and less time to get bored of the subject!

Great Job!
I can't draw hair worth poop! So this is exceptional in my book!
